4 Things All Used Car Owners Should Know About Taking Care of Their Cars

If you own a used car, then chances are good that you expect to do some sort of maintenance on the car over the next year. Both new and used cars require maintenance in regular intervals. However, used cars may be closer to needing some maintenance than some used cars simply because they've been in use longer. Therefore, be sure that you keep an eye out for maintenance issues that may need addressing.

Here are four common things that used car owners should keep in mind when caring for their cars:

Lights

Your headlights use light bulbs that are very similar to the light bulbs that you would use in your home. Just like the bulbs in your home, these car light bulbs need to be replaced from time to time. Light bulbs on a used car may need to be replaced sooner than light bulbs on a new car because they've been used before you've owned the car. It may be a good idea to check your light bulbs every few months to make sure that they are all working correctly and equally as bright.

Battery

Just about everyone will need to replace or jump-start their battery at some point over the course of their lifetimes. Make sure that the terminals of your battery are clean and that they do not have any corrosion or build-up on them. If there is corrosion or gunky build-up, clean the terminals until they are clear of debris. You may need to replace your battery about every three years.

Oil

It's important to check your oil level regularly. In fact, mechanics recommend that you check your oil about every other time you fill up your car, even if you get regular oil changes. To check your oil, make sure your car is on a level surface. Remove the dip stick. Wipe it off. Replace the clean dip stick into the oil tank all the way. Remove it again and gauge the amount of oil in the tank. If it is too low, it may be time to put more oil into your tank.

Brake Fluid

Brake fluid is used in all vehicles and helps to ensure that you are able to stop appropriately. The brake fluid reservoir is located able the brake pedal under the hood of your car. Make sure that it is clear and filled between the "add" and "max" lines on the container.
